Korg EX-8000 Resources, Tips and Tricks

I am getting my EX-8000 back in working order and I have found resources scattered about the web, so I thought I would consolidate them here, although I am doubtful that anyone will be able to quickly find this page given the state of the web in 2023! : )

Reset

If you have let the battery drain or changed it recently, the data in the RAM is probably now completely corrupted. It can act very strange until reset and replaced with new patch data. To reset the EX-8000, Switch off, hold down 5 and 8, switch on again. All the patches will be completely cleared, so you will need to program them fresh or reload them.

Midi Channel Parameter

Parameter 84 is how you set the MIDI channel.

Sysex Enable

Param 85 needs to be set to 2 for the unit to receive Sysex data. If it is set to 1 then the synth only responds to MIDI note messages

Latest Firmware Eprom

A few sellers are claiming to have the final firmware available, I have not tried these.

Dyslexic Thoughts

Being dyslexic can often mean apologizing for others mistakes assuming they are yours before discovering the truth and feeling like it’s too late to correct the misunderstanding.

IUMA! Oh, the things you forget...

My wife and I were watching Halt& Catch Fire the other night and they mentioned IUMA with sent me back! I had totally forgotten. Just Now I was clearing old email and came across a note which I mention my band was charting on IUMA and had hit #31. Nice! Wish I had a screen shot.

Things to remember...

I have rarely met a person from whom I had absolutely nothing to learn.

Kids need scary tech stories...

As adults, We have Black Mirror and Electric Dreams, but is anyone producing kids shows that act as a cautionary tale about tech run amok? They arguably are the ones who need to be warned.

The Phillip K. Dick version of goosebumps.

Brains continue to develop into the mid 20’s

Although this seems to be true...
I think the important thing to remember is that it is likely that brain development could be described as a progression with a slowing curve rather than a switch. You mature gradually and should be given respect befitting your age as well as be expected to show a similar amount of responsibility.  I think we are not giving young people the respect and responsibility that they deserve and crave and then suddenly we snap our fingers and ask them to be completely mature. That’s a tough thing to ask of them.

We should not use this science as an excuse to treat young adults as kids or let them use it as an excuse to act like children.

AI should be different from us

We are trying too hard to make AI “relatable “, instead we should be making it as different from us as we can stand. In any form it takes, even below average humans and children should be able to easily tell that they are communicating with something artificial. Don’t strive to make it hard to detect with a Turing style test, don’t give it gender, don’t make it sound like a kind and friendly human pal who is there to solve your customer support problems. NO! It should stand apart from us and the line should be dead simple and clear by custom and perhaps by law. If we don’t differentiate NOW, I can see a time when the tech will get away from average people and be used to manipulate and control the masses. Understand, I am not as worried about the AI acting badly as I am about how humans will misuse it.

All those SciFi cautionary tales about people being addicted to virtual worlds may be on to something.

Just watched demos for DirectX 12 Raytracing and it occurs to me that what is driving tech development is our mad rush to escape reality.

Wacky Dads!

Surprising how often "good involved dads" in movies and TV also happen to be "wacky misunderstood inventors"... hmmmm.

The internet is NOT REAL LIFE! said the troll back in 2001.

I found this text clipping I saved from Tuesday, November 20, 2001 at 2:00 AM in my old files today.

Person trying to justify vile behavior online back in 2001:
“People flame because of the way people act.  This is the Internet, not real life.  Some people just cant fathom the idea that the 2 are different.”

What I wrote in response:
"Um, HOW is the Internet different that RL? The Internet is just a form of communication.... nothing more, nothing magical; it’s not an alternate reality.

Its just a jazzed up walkie talkie.

So by your logic, if some one called your house and spewed vulgar insults then that would be ok because the phone is "not real"?

The statement that the Internet is "not RL" sounds allot like primitive superstition to me.  Much like a remote tribe of people 40 years ago that thought photography would seal your soul! lol...

Wake up! Acting anti-social is just that. Doing it on the internet in the future will be seen as no different than doing it by mail.

So get a head start now and act like a human being in ALL communications with other human beings. The anonymity of the Internet is an illusion. Everyday that passes you are more and more a citizen here just as you are walking down the street, bound by the rules of society.

Peace,

Doc."

I wonder if that person feels the same these days? Please take note of how even back in 2001 I rarely hid my identity online. I stood behind my words. If I published something, I meant it! I wish other people had set the same standard for themselves. we might be living in a different world now.

Why I'm Angry At Us...

(I wrote this in the weeks after the election and never posted it…Maybe I thought it was too inflammatory or that I was being unfair. in review I don’t see much wrong with it. it was how I felt.)

People have turned the country I love into a joke and in many cases, it was because of a single issue that people had blown out of proportion in their minds to the point that it frightened them into acting irresponsibly. I understand wanting to tear down the establishment, I have wanted real change for longer than most, but I strongly feel that people who voted for this administration used a very inappropriate tool. Like using a rusty crowbar to remove a few bad teeth in an otherwise healthy mouth.

I understand the disenfranchised people who saw a continuation of the status quo as unacceptable. I sympathize, but I can not believe that he is the person to fix it.

I understand the people who feel the democrats cheated and robbed Sanders of the nomination. Again, I did not care for that one bit. My support for Sanders is a matter of public record. Even at a time when I was avoiding discussing politics, I broke my silence and shared my joy of having a candidate that spoke of many of the same things I had wanted for so long (often feeling very alone back in the days when no one else even considered such things aloud). So yes losing him was bad for me. But how is it worth putting our trust in a blatant liar and con man? A man whose own words should have disqualified him hundreds of times from consideration.

The “tone” of Trump, (currently president-elect) over the length of the campaign has unquestionably emboldened people with hate in their hearts, and they are out there now, doing real damage to the security and peace we have built. How is it that I'M the one that's now supposed to be calm!? People are suggesting people like me should be quiet and let the process happen, I agree to a point. I will try not to engage in pointless obstruction like I have seen people do with our last president, I will try not to spread misinformation like I have seen people willfully do with our last president. I will, however, engage in honest and well-considered efforts to prevent his administration from changing my America into something unrecognizable and I will fight the idea that his demeanor and way of dealing with problems sets a standard for us as a nation.

I have always done my best to respect the office of the president, (even George W.) but now because of hot button issues and selfish interests, I am now be expected to swallow my pride and show respect to such an openly self-absorbed, insensitive, and outright villainous person? No... I’m sorry, resistance is the only patriotic path acceptable.

Disinformation Wants To Be Free! Or... "I don't know shit for sure, and that's the way I like it!"

Hopeful open minded skepticism:
The understanding that we can't actually know anything for certain because we are
deeply aware that all information we receive apart from what we directly experience is filtered through other people's perceptions before it gets to us, and that, to some degree, it is unintentionally skewed or purposefully manipulated by noble or nefarious motivations or self-interest.

When I was a young man I came to the realization that the only source of information that I could trust completely was my own experiences.  All other information had to be consumed with the understanding that I could never absolutely know if it was factual. I could only rank the information, compare it to other sources and come to an opinion that I would need to keep flexible in case competing information challenged the rank I had previously given it. I started training my brain on this concept making it a deeply ingrained part of my belief system. The goal was not to become paranoid or untrusting but understand The flow of information, the motivations of the people presenting it and to avoid being misled or manipulated.

Of course, that was before the Internet.

Perhaps because of this mindset, I made modest attempts to warn people at the onset of online self-publishing that we were entering a dangerous new age and that we needed to develop systems for vetting information. I tried to urge caution as I foresaw a world with astounding and frightening opportunities for those who would like to "shape" the thinking of people who were not as disciplined as I had made myself. I'm afraid that my warnings went mostly unheard, my audience was much too small to have any effect. Outside of the few half-interested friends, postings on message boards, comment sections of blogs and news sites that mostly no longer exist, I doubt I had any impact whatsoever. People who raised alarms like I did were very few and far between and quite unpopular. The much larger voices of the time were all about how wonderful and different the technology was and how the free flow of information was the most important thing. The idea of limiting information in any way was seen as sacrilegious. They used to say "information wants to be free!" I did not see the Internet as fundamentally "different", just a much more efficient way to do the same things we have always done, including misbehave. Unfortunately, disinformation also enjoys that same freedom.

I don't think most people are inherently bad, I think many times they are tragically misinformed. Because they have not developed or been taught the tools to be open-minded, empathetic, and skeptical, they are incapable of navigating the increasingly complex and confounding information landscape we all are now forced to live in. They retreat into simple and nonchallenging world views because the alternative is asking WAY to much of them.
I am seen by some as a clever person, but I find it very taxing to try to sort and categorize the information I am presented each day. It would be MUCH simpler to just join a group or listen to a single loud voice that "mostly" aligns with the way I feel about things and switch off the part of me that has to consider each point as a separate issue. This gives the handful of people who really want to push an agenda a powerful tool.

I don't see things getting better very soon, sources that fact check content of the Internet are under attack themselves, this is not really surprising as the people who wish to distort facts can't abide by such institutions. But my question is why are there so FEW of them? Why are we not heavily invested in the business of sorting fact from fiction? Furthermore, who is continuing to do the fact finding that these sites use? Newspapers?! Increasing investigative reporting is getting downsized at news organizations. I have been watching a tv show that presents surprising facts about commonly held misconceptions in a humorous and entertaining way, but they often site 60 minutes as the source of the information... think about that for a second. Large numbers  of people are all watching the funny show... that presents facts... that were uncovered by real investigative reporters... from a show that very few people watch anymore. So what happens when I news sources like 60 minutes are gone for good?

We need more critical thinking. It needs to be taught.

We need more empathy. We need to encourage it in our young people.

We need to give people real tools to help them sort information on the web.

We should seek ways to bring people out of their information bubbles, we should all stop thinking we absolutely know what is true.

Disinformation Wants To Be Free. How to we fix the "repository of all human knowledge" before it destroys us? I don't know the answer... I am just very mad tonight because I have been asking the question for two decades while people told me I was overreacting and it would "all work out", and that "truth will rise to the top". Now I find myself and my loved ones living in a cracked world brought on in part by people seeming to be more interested in the flashy gleam of a new toy than they were concerned by how it could harm what we had built. It would seem that nearly half of us believe a whole bunch of untrue garbage supported by self motivated cranks on the internet, and the other half believe a different set of untrue garbage ASLO supported by self motivated cranks on the internet. Who is to say which set of garbage is less untrue? You can't "prove" anything. People can find competing "facts" for every point and piece of evidence you provide. Sources? News media is a joke because they sold out journalistic standards long ago. Fact Checking is a dirty word. Techno-hippies and their damed belief that the internet would self regulate... yup it has settled into a perfect balance of truth and lies! The trouble is average people are give no way to tell the difference. Do I think it can be fixed? Yes... but people need to want to do it, they have to demand it, and they have to start NOW.

***Update November 10, 2016 at 7:38 AM***

Maybe we are in a transitional phase. People used to say "they couldn't print it if it weren't true" sometimes sarcastically, but often in earnest. Perhaps there's a large population of people who still believe that its literally true and believe to some extent that information found on the Internet must carry some weight. Maybe young kids born into a world saturated with tech will not have that same bias and will understand instinctively that most of what they find on the Internet needs to be met with a great deal of skepticism. At least a higher percentage of them will develop some immunity, but this still doesn't solve the problem of vulnerable people who because of medically related decline in cognitive ability, or just a natural lower intelligence have difficulty distinguishing fact from fiction. Something that is becoming more time consuming to even the sharpest of us.

***Update November 11, 2016 at 12:38 PM***

A couple of weeks back I posted this blog entry discussing my dismay over people becoming overwhelmed by misinformation and not being given useful tools to break free of their information bubbles that they find much more comforting than trying to sort the purposely confusing sea of facts and lies floating about these days.

Well today, while doing research on the ACLU I discovered this interesting site. http://www.procon.org Now the fact that I had never heard of it or seen anyone ever link to it somewhat proves my point, and it falls far short of the sort of in-line real time truthfulness ranking tool I imagine and hope could be ubiquitous someday. But in the mean time, I found it very helpful in understanding two sides of a complex issue.

I would like people to use it and spread the word about it. Perhaps it will not get the bad rap that fact-checking sites have recently since it presents both sides of an argument and lets the user decide

Delayed understanding.

It's taken me 40 years to fully realize the brilliance of Aqualung.

I have always thought that Jethro Tull's Aqualung was a fantastic piece of music, but as I was trying to explain lyrics to my son, I had an epiphany. I was telling him how it was story the of an old man who I believed was homeless and how people saw him is being scary and strange but actually that there was more to him than that. When I was young man listening to the song, I recall thinking that the song was about the duality in his personality and that he was both things, a gentle old man and dangerous antisocial wild man to be feared. That he was cruel to strangers because the world was cruel to him, but still had the capacity to connect when shown kindness. Not a bad analysis for a teenager.

It is amazing how powerful saying something out loud is because when I explained the song to my son it triggered whole new connections. I guess I had never really questioned my interpretation for all these years, but now I'm pretty sure the song is all about our perception of the homeless and how WE treat them. Whether we see The homeless automatically as dangerous, dirty, creatures to be feared... or as people in need of of help. this more nuanced meaning presented itself to me very clearly, and now its hard for me to hear it as anything other than a social commentary on us and how we treat people who find themselves in this bad situation any assumptions we make about them. The juxtaposition of the song going back and forth from the hard rock and the gentle acoustic treatments represents the two extremes, fear and repulsion, and empathy.

I have to say, has someone who was not always sure after secure financial future, and could easily imagine myself in that situation, this new revelation about the song and its meaning had quite an emotional impact on me. I hope that if given the chance to time travel I would keep my mouth shut and allow my younger self to enjoy his interpretation of the song. After all, there's only one or two people in the world, who really know what the intentions of those lyrics are, and to be honest, if they are anything like me, they may have forgotten by now. But that's the wonderful thing about music, it's means what It means to the person listening to it at the time. I have to try to remember that. So even those people who clearly have never listen to the lyrics of any song in their life, are still getting emotional connection from the music, Even if I feel like they are missing a beautiful treasure. Who knows? Maybe they will discover new meaning in that song 40 years later.

Meme Repair

Took a moment to fix this meme that I saw as being flawed today... mostly because I was curious. I didn't really see it as upsetting or anything. It is a bit funny to see such a clear example of how subtle changes in lighting and facial expression can change your perception of a person in an image. The mustache is still a bit creepy however... heh.

Our Written Language Is Flawed And Confusing...

Should we try harder to understand those who question it?
Horydczak, Theodor,

It is a mess, I have said it for as long as I can remember. I have lots of examples, like silent letters, words that sound nothing like they are spelled, the fact that y is only "sometimes" a vowel... The list is very long and I have never had the energy to compile it. Luckily one woman has taken the time to explain why she had so much trouble with at least one aspect of it. In her article Kate Gladstone tackles what it is to be a person with autism dealing with the insanity that is handwriting.

It is fascinating and revealing. See it here...

So much of her article strikes a chord with my personal experience. I have "learning differences" and although there is no real way to compare that to the experiences of someone like the author or this article, I hope it is safe to say that we each see the world differently than others do to varying degrees. And that it won't offend when I say that I feel like I may be able to understand and empathize. There are many things about our written language that have always annoyed me greatly because they are so inefficient. Often parts of it are so senseless and ridiculous that it seemed to me as a child that someone must have been playing a cruel joke on me. Why should it be this way, why wouldn't anyone try to fix it? And most of all, why is everyone pretending it is normal!?

It's a common thread in my life, I despise inefficiency and am drawn to simple and elegant design. I rail against things that don't make sense (cents, sents) and feel like I need to do something to correct a problem that I clearly see in front of me. Honestly, people who just accept the status quo without question sometimes seem weak willed to me. Just saying "Thats the way it is" is NOT an answer I have ever found acceptable, even when I was small.

So when Kate said in her article "When our best efforts at understanding are penalized, we often stop trying or caring." That really hit home... It was something I had often thought myself. Yes, what ever you do, don't be that clever kid that can see the folly in the flawed language that your teachers are tasked with instructing you in at all costs. Hopefully kids with differences have it better than her and I did.

It has taken me my whole life to be able to compose the text you are reading now with some amount of confidence... Even though I likely could have thought it or spoke the words when I was very young. I have wrestled this monster for decades, and it is an ugly beast. The funny thing being, is that once most people learn to a point that they are comfortable, they just stop. I could not, I needed to prove that I was not the idiot I was being made out to be, so I kept going, and I still learn and understand more and more little by little. Forcing it all into my head like shoving unruly snakes into a basket with many holes. I can do more now than I could when I was 40. I could do more when I was 40 than when I was 30, and if you look at my writings from when I was 20... Back when most people are "finished learning such things"... Well, let's just say I would be deeply embarrassed. For most, our written language is either quirky, and fun, or boring, and automatic. For me, it has always been an oppressive creature pinning me down. Finally, later in life, I feel like there is hope I may eventually get the thing into a half nelson.

The Internet As A Digital Side Show

Welcome to the digital freak show! Feeling uncomfortable yet?

Untitled Shahn, Ben, 1898-1969, photographer.

Recently I was reading back through some old posts I made on various message boards and I came across a thread from 2007 in which people where mocking the public behavior of a rising "internet star" who self described as being a highly functioning autistic. The person was using the internet to make a spectacle of themselves by posting videos of outrageous and potentially dangerous antics and people were eating it up and at the same time showing very little understanding or compassion for the underlying problems that could be leading to his admittedly unusual and potentially threatening behavior. The whole thing reminded me of something... and then it dawned on me, it's the new equivalent of the circus side show! And we thought we were soooo evolved... pft! We are doing the same crap. Voyeuristically watching others who are somehow different so that we can mock them or at best pity them, but with this new version, we are sparred the "indignity" of paying money to create this artificial chasm between "us" and "them", it is mostly free, and the best thing about it is that we can be as brutal as we want because we feel anonymous. We never have to look them or anyone else in the eye while doing it. So we are spared the shame and guilt we used to feel when we had to gather in public to try desperately to feel better about ourselves. Its all so private... and clean... and digital.

Ah, the magic of the internet.

Here is what I wrote back in 2007 that effectively ended the original thread dead cold...

"*Disclaimer: Doc is not an expert on brain disorders... he just has a few personal theories about them.*

Assuming we take the information given at face value, the bottom line for me is that the person seems to have problems... possibly both physiological and psychological. For that reason, I don't know if I want to participate in mocking him publicly.

He IS putting himself out there to be mocked for sure... but if we choose not to take the bait, then other people will be less likely to seek fame from encouraging ridicule of their shortcomings. And to be honest, I am not so sure he "gets" the underlying tone of his "popularity", he seems to be not entirely able to successfully interact socially after all. I wonder if any attention he receives satisfies a need in him, even if it is negative and can only add to his issues down the road. Will making him "famous" stop him from acting badly in public and getting arrested in places he goes to look for girls? I don't think it will.

To me his "star status" just seems like a digital equivalent to an old circus side show. Something we as a culture thought we were beyond but in fact we are still starring at the people who are different from what is considered average because it helps us each individually feel more "normal".

As far as him having psychological issues that go beyond being autistic, who is to say how much being autistic screws with your self esteem and general mental health? Aspects of your brain function may be normal or even superior to average but I think that could be a serious detriment to being otherwise balanced because you may have the ability to comprehend just how your autism effects your life and limits what you can accomplish. I think thats gotta mess with ya.

Brain dysfunction has a wide range of effects on people and we are nowhere near being able to understand it fully. I think at some point in the future we will have a better grasp of just how unique and different each persons "mind" is and we look back on the idea of thinking that people are either "normal" or "abnormal" as very naive."

Laying down on the battlefield is something I may understand...

Planes full of innocents shot out of the sky, never-ending war fought over dusty old books and dusty old concepts, some police that seem to think they are the military and the population is the enemy, efforts for gender equality that seem to be perpetually stalled or moving at such a snails pace as to seem stalled. Lingering race problems that should have been nothing but a bad memory by now. Sure its bad, and I think I may know how you feel brother... I have tried too. I only wish I could have done a fraction of the good you did. But still, I know what its like to try so hard for so long and not feel like it really made much difference. I am so sorry you could not stay longer. Learning that you have fallen is like a lance through the heart. I am supposed to be smart, and with that, I have felt a responsibility... Am I supposed to find some way to make things better? Is THAT the same feeling that brought you down? Because if it is. I understand... How can creators, thinkers, entertainers... bringers of knowledge, truth and joy build any faster than the greed driven takers, and hate filled destroyers rip away at the things we build? We have little snack trays of truths wrapped up in songs, stories, science and jokes and they have t-shirt cannons of glitter, wealth, fear, glamor, and hate. Still I don't agree that it was time to surrender even if you felt like you had done all you could.

Cameras on my mind

Cameras are on my mind. Screw google glass as a plaything for people addicted to the digital teat... how about putting a small POV camera on EVERY police officer in America. Every gun, every badge, every dash. Camera, camera, camera. I can't think of a good reason anyone should object. I want to trust the police, I want others to be able to trust them. But the problem is they are fallible people just like all of us. No amount of training will solve every problem when people are thrown into the mix with all their flaws. I know some efforts exist to make this happen, I am going to look into them and see what the pros and cons are.

Breaking my own rule on celebrity deaths.

I am not quick to heap praise on celebrities when they past away, especially if they have taken their own life or abused substances to the point that it kills them. I don't want to add to the mystique of the tragic famous person that died too young. They are just people after all, they had talent and got a series of lucky breaks and perhaps worked very hard... But that makes them no different or better than the people in my life that I personally know and love. Those are the people I want to reserve my admiration for.

The death of Robin Williams however, presents a special case for me and makes it difficult to stay within those guidelines. He was a friend to a sad little boy, a like minded deep thinker to a maturing young man, a crusader for truth to someone who wanted the world to be honest and true, and a constant reminder to a cynic that the world and the bodies we live in are ridiculous, hilarious, and beautiful... At least the characters he played were all those things. He was the near perfect mixture of white faced and red nosed clown. He skillfully took the words and direction of very clever people and turned them into unforgettable performances that reminded us of our mortality and then let us know that it was OK to be mortal... I can't say I will miss him, because I never knew HIM, and I still have all the gifts he gave me. I can only say that I am somewhat selfishly sad that I will not be receiving any more of those amazing gifts, and that I never got a chance to personally say thank you.

Here is a partial list of the Robin Williams movies that I love him in. Not all are great movies but I still enjoyed him in them. People tend to ignore some of them… I see that as a mistake.

The World According to Garp (See this film, don’t question me… just do it!)

Moscow on the Hudson (Not bad, I recall being moved want to see it again)

Good Morning, Vietnam (Great and everyone knows it)

Dead Poets Society (Great and everyone knows it)

Awakenings (Brain oddness is a personal interest to me, in a "there for the grace of god" sorta way)

The Fisher King (I fully expect I would go mad the same way his character had in this film. Its hard for me to watch because I feel it hitting so close to home)

Hook (Made me emotional when I first saw it, now as a father it hold even more meaning, who else could have played that role? I wish I could edit it and take out some of the cheesy stuff but, still)

Toys (Hey, don’t judge me!)

Good Will Hunting (Great and everyone knows it)

What Dreams May Come (Sappy and bombastic, sure…. do I love it. YES! Can you imagine watching this film NOW while thinking about his own passing. I think that would turn me into a mess)

Bicentennial Man (Screw you haters! Hard speculative fiction! Bite it and love it!)

One Hour Photo (Freaky)

World's Greatest Dad (Also one that will be hard to watch again now… great film).
